Sure, its possible to live without credit cards and probably a must if you have difficulty paying them off every month. You can get some of the same convenience with a debit card, but you get more protection from a credit card with the ability to have the credit card company help fight any disputed charges or faulty merchandise. I wouldn't want to do any online shopping without a credit card because of this protection.
Also, if you don't have any credit card history, then you likely don't have much of a credit rating, so this can make it more difficult to buy a house, car or other large expense where you need a loan.
